MRC Myobrace: Early Age Preventive Orthodontics for Children

A Conversation with Orthodontist Dr. Rebecca Chen

What is MRC Myobrace?

MRC Myobrace is a preventive pre-orthodontic treatment that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of crooked teeth, often without the need for braces or extraction of teeth, unlocking natural growth and development. Treatment is best suited to children aged 3 to 15 and involves using a series of removable intra-oral appliances that are worn for 1-2 hours each day plus overnight while sleeping.

Why do Children need MRC?

Modern research has identified that many orthodontic problems in teens and adults are the result of incorrect jaw development during childhood. Mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking (known as incorrect myofunctional habits) are the most common causes. Allergies, asthma and an open mouth posture also contribute to incorrect jaw development. Growing up, most of us have had one or more of these myofunctional problems, which may have been the cause of incorrect dental and facial development. This incorrect jaw development limits the jaw space available for erupting teeth and prevents them from erupting into their ideal natural position.

MRC is designed to deal with these incorrect myofunctional habits by teaching children to breathe through their nose, rest the tongue correctly in the roof of the mouth, swallow correctly and continue widening the jaws so they grow to their full and proper size. This results in sufficient jaw room for teeth to come in naturally straight and often without extensive need for braces.

When is the Best time to start MRC?

The best time to start MRC treatment is between 3-15 years old and therefore it is normal to only have a few adult teeth. Because MRC treatment works by promoting correct facial development and jaw growth through removing bad oral habits, the best and most stable results are often achieved early while the child is still growing. Generally, the earlier treatment is started - the higher the level of success can be achieved. Good compliance allows for the best results in growing children aged 3 - 15 years.

How long does MRC treatment take?

It heavily depends on your child’s compliance to MRC treatment and their biological ability to change habits as well as growth patterns. The earlier treatment is started, the higher level of success. Suggested treatment time with good compliance is generally two to three years, providing there are no other significant health concerns limiting treatment results.

Does My Child Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Everyone is unique and so are their oral conditions.  Generally speaking, your child may need orthodontic treatments if your child is having symptoms such as crooked or crowded teeth, too much space between teeth, an overbite or underbite, misaligned bite, or is simply growing teeth.  If you are concerned with your child's teeth, please make an appointment with an orthodontist for a consultation and evaluation.

Who should I get MRC from? Find an Orthodontist

Orthodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of orthodontic problems.  While there is some orthodontic instructions in dental school, it is minimal.  It is in the post-dental school orthodontic program that orthodontists receive many years of intense training in proper, safe tooth movement and the guidance of dental, jaw and facial development (dentofacial orthopedics).  These extra years of school make the orthodontist the specialist in moving teeth and aligning jaws and this is the only focus of their practice.  While general dentists and pediatric dentists offer orthodontic treatments, orthodontists are uniquely qualified, by virtue of extra years of education and scope of practice, as experts who have the skills and experience to give you a healthy and beautiful smile.
